So this evening I went to see my first play in NYC. And I have to say that I believe my choice in firsts was a well made one. No, I didn’t see Wicked or Spamalot. Instead I went to a little confectionary delight entitled “Reese’s Pieces,” and it was fucking hilarious.
The performance took the form of a “completely accurate reproduction of an industry showcase, presented exactly as it was in October of 2006 (Old Fashioned Calender)” It consisted of four very funny and engaging actors (Shane Breaux, Sean Dillon*, Elizabeth Kennedy, and Dave McKeel) trying their hardest to convince a panel of three prestigious scientific judges (actors sitting in the back row dressed as circus folk), that their recreation of various scenes, or “skits” as they were called in the late 20th/early 21st century, were legitimately presented as they would have been back in the day… the day being today.
Look, I may not be able to give the “plot” justice through my inane ramblings, but all you need to know is that it was funny as hell. Writer and Director of this little slice of the business they call show, Rob Reese created a plethora of funny that is akin to some of the best sketch comedy I have seen to date (A.K.A. The State). If you live in the NYC area, you really outta go check it out on one of the two remaining performances (Oct 17th and 18th) at the sage theater on 7th Ave, between 47th and 48th if my feeble memory serves me.
Seriously, if you find drug obsessed guidance councilors, homosexual centurions, and genital herpes (sometimes all at the same time) as funny as I do, get your ass to the Sage! However if you’ve just had a collapsed lung, have weak stomach muscles, or generally just hate laughter as so many of us do, steer clear of this one. Its chalk-full this “funny” all the kids seem to be doing these days. …fucking kids…
